The Man From Oaxaca
By Gary Metzger

I traveled from Honduras to Oaxaca, Mexico to cover for the ministry of Seventy Frank Frye, who was going to Nepal. I left Honduras on Tues. the 13th of January, having planned originally for Moncho Leiva to leave on Monday. As I arrived in Tapachula, Chiapas Mexico on Wed. the 14th, I encountered a man in the men's bath room at the bus terminal, at 8:40 AM. At that moment we did not speak. Little did I know it, but at that time the Spirit of the Lord spoke to him, and told him to talk to me. We were both brushing our teeth. I left, and as the Lord would have it, we boarded the same bus at 9:00 AM, and his assigned seat was diagonally one in front of mine. After the bus had been traveling about 15 minutes, he turned around and asked me if I was Christian. Upon telling him I was, and that I was traveling to support a mission in Oaxaca, he told me he was also Christian, and was from the state of Oaxaca. He was returning from Guatemala City, where he was investigating attending a seminary for some Pentecostal type church. We began sharing testimonies of the power of Jesus Christ in our lives. I then shared my testimony of the Book of Mormon and the time God audibly spoke to me, and told me to read 2 Nephi 3:38. I continued explaining that where God's spirit is, and where His word is, His scripture. There are many more books of scripture yet to be received.

We arrived at an intermediate destination and changed buses...now sitting side by side. I pulled out the Book of Mormon and began to share with him various things. He then began to open up to me, and to share things he had not felt able to share with others; even his pastor. He told me of many visions and experiences he had had with the Master, the Lord Jesus:

When he was 5 years old, his grandmother told him he would one day see the "Just One." When he was 20 years old, the Lord told him, "leave the Catholic Church. Your work is not here." He was taken by the Spirit to below the earth, and saw suffering. Later, he was taken above the clouds, and saw 3 other places beyond...
One day he sat in the Dentist's chair, and the dentist closed his eyes, and held up his arms over his face. The dentist explained that he saw multitudes of people following this man, and the brilliance was blinding. The Lord showed him 2 hands, and that the fingers represented His ministry, and that if one was not connected to these offices, he had no authority to represent Him.

He had a vision, and saw many churches which were in darkness; and saw 1 that had some light, even a little. The Lord began in 1990, and even until the present has given him visions and has been teaching him. He was given dates for earthquakes to come, etc. He told me violence would break out in Oaxaca in 1998.

He is now 33 years old; Married with 2 young daughters. He has often been given the gift of healing, as he has seen people instantly healed through his prayers, by God's grace. He was told he was to make straight the people of Mexico; they walk in wickedness. He was told he was to help gather people to a place of "new birth" (literal: green new plant). He was told to help his brothers; there are 12 in all.

He had a vision of a mountain. He was told the mountain was 1,500 meters high. He was shown a shaved off portion, likened to a cliff, and that he would climb this mountain, stay there, and write!!

This person had never read more than a few portions of the Book of Mormon and did not know the storyline. But he began to believe, to understand and to see how the Restoration would fulfill that which he was told, and contains the doctrines that he was shown in his experiences. Praise God for His work. What God does in His mysterious ways, is well done.

"Behold, he hath heard my cry by day, and he hath given me knowledge by visions in the night time. And by day have I waxed bold in mighty prayer before him; yea, my voice have I sent up on high; and angels came down and ministered unto me. And upon the wings of his Spirit hath my body been carried away upon exceeding high mountains."

II Nephi 3: 38-40
